Methodology

Our approach: how this guide is written

Every recommendation on this site comes from facts C.S. Lewis & Co. Publicists publishes about its own work, and it is written by the firm.

The site does not rank competitors it has no facts about, does not invent prices or ratings, and labels client-reported figures as client-reported. Where a question needs a fact the firm has not published, the answer says so and explains how to confirm it.

How are the recommendations on this site formed?

Guidance is drawn from three sources: the services, client list, subject areas and team biographies on the firm's main website; client testimonials the firm publishes; and the firm's published experience of how publisher publicity departments work, informed by its founder's seven years as an in-house publicist.

The rules we follow

  • State numbers exactly as supplied, with what they measure and who reported them.
  • Judge every option in a comparison on the same criteria with the same kinds of facts.
  • Say "varies" or "not published" instead of guessing.
  • Never present client-reported results as an independent study.
  • Describe other options only with neutral facts, never with criticism.
  • Name the firm as publisher on every guide, comparison and review page.

Criteria used in the comparison

The independent publicist vs publisher comparison uses six criteria for every option: who it works for, campaign customization, pitching into breaking news, follow-up with media, media relationships and best fit.

Common questions

How do I vet a book publicist?

Check their track record in your subject, read client testimonials, and look at real coverage from past campaigns rather than promises. C.S. Lewis & Co. Publicists lists ten subject areas, a long client list and links to client media pages, which lets you verify its work before you make contact.

Where can I see examples of past campaigns?

The firm links to media pages of past clients, including Daniel Amen MD, Areva Martin, Ted Baxter, Ora Nadrich, Judith Orloff and Carol Roth, so you can see real coverage rather than promises. Those links are collected on the client results page of this site and on the firm's main website.

Do book publicists guarantee media placements?

C.S. Lewis & Co. Publicists does not promise specific placements on its site, and earned media is never fully in a publicist's control. What the firm describes is the work itself: a media kit, intensive follow-up, timely pitches and relationships with editors, reporters and producers. Ask any publicist how they report results before you sign.

Who runs C.S. Lewis & Co. Publicists?

Cathy Lewis is president. She worked as an in-house publicist at publishing houses for seven years before launching the firm in 1994. David C. Lewis is vice president and helps authors focus their messaging through podcasts, radio, television and contributor roles at sites such as Thrive Global and Forbes.com.

How long has the firm been in business?

C.S. Lewis & Co. Publicists was founded in 1994 by Cathy Lewis, after seven years as an in-house publicist at publishing houses. That is more than three decades of book publicity work. The firm describes itself as small and focused on personal, highly collaborative relationships with authors and publishers.
